My Reflections on Assignment One(Loaf Sharing Using Arithmetic Progression).
I had the opportunity to work with Chris and Jumia, and I
truly appreciated the high level of teamwork. We met several times in the
Scarfe building to discuss the task at hand, and each of us put in our best
effort to analyze the question we picked. I especially valued the fact that
everyone on our team had the chance to share their contributions, and we
carefully considered each solution. When there were reservations, we took a
step back to reassess our ideas.
On presentation day, I felt so proud of my team because our
humility shone through. It was all about the task and our shared goal. One
surprising experience during the presentation was when Chris mentioned we were
sharing the loaf of bread among 12 people, rather than the 9 people we had
initially discussed. Instead of interrupting, I was eager to see how we could
tackle the problem with this new figure. In the end, I realized it was an
error, but I recognized that such mistakes could reveal important insights. Not
every figure will lead to the desired arithmetic progression needed to solve
the practical problem we were given. Twelve (12) may have worked if the
question had been patterned in another way.
I believe errors can serve as valuable opportunities to
clarify our intentions when explaining a topic, helping students think
reflectively when faced with challenges. I remember when I taught in Nigeria, I
would encourage my students to view their mistakes as learning experiences. By
diligently uncovering the source of their errors, they could deepen their
understanding of the subject matter. Both failure and success are essential
steps toward achieving greater success.
Another insight I got is that a shift from 9 participants to
12 altered the numerical pattern and changed the arithmetic progression,
reminding me that small changes in data can significantly affect mathematical
reasoning. However, I just want to give a big shout-out to my partners in
progress on the assignment because overall, our working together gave room for
communication, flexibility, and reflective thinking.
